CHAPTER 15

“Everything looks fabulous, Dani, and Cosette is bound to be pleased with what you’ve done. This spread is perfect for the location, the purpose, and the time of day. What do you think?” Arthur asked.

“I’m happy. I just hope the ladies eat it. Given the dynamics of the situation, I’m a little afraid they’ll decide to boycott the food as a protest against Cosette for having a chef from California prepare it, rather than one of their own local caterers.”

“Dani, there is absolutely nothing you can do about that. And I have a feeling if they did, Cosette is very capable of a payback. Maybe she’ll just say ‘Bless you’ to each one of them as they’re leaving.

“By the way, what did you think of Anna riding a horse all by herself?” Arthur asked.

“Truthfully?” Dani asked as she put her hands on her hips and looked him fully in the eye. “If it hadn’t turned out okay, I probably would have killed Briana. Well, maybe not actually, but I definitely would have fired her. I had absolutely no idea that Anna would be permitted to ride a horse by herself, even though she was as excited about it as I’ve ever seen her.

“Believe me, if I’d been there that would not have happened, and then she’d probably be in therapy over it for years, and it would all be my fault.”

“I think you’re exaggerating a little, Dani,” Arthur said.

“Yeah, you’re probably right, but I’m very, very glad I didn’t know about it while we were trying to prepare everything. I think them not calling to get my permission was probably a good move, because if they’d told me, I would be in a complete lose-lose situation. Panicked she’d break a leg or worse if she rode the horse, and panicked she’d hate me for the rest of my life, if I didn’t let her.”

“Well, turned out to be kind of one of those all’s well that ends well things,” Arthur said. “Back to this event. We’ve got fifteen minutes until the guests arrive and everything looks fine to me. I peeked out a few minutes ago and the salon is beautifully set up with flowers and the whole nine yards.”

“Good,” Dani said. Just then the door opened and Anna walked in, accompanied by Briana. “Oh, sweetheart, you look absolutely beautiful,” she said as Anna twirled around to show her the dress. Briana had curled her hair so ringlets fell to her shoulders.

“What do you think, Uncle Arthur?” Anna asked.

“I think you’re going to make all those ladies very, very jealous, because I bet not one of them looked half as good when they were young.”

“And see,” Anna said as she raised her foot. “My ballet slippers are just perfect with it. They’re off-white and look like they were made to go with this dress.”

The kitchen door opened and Cosette and Hattie walked in. “Oh, Anna, you look absolutely perfect. I wish whoever owned that dress originally could see you now.
